Saraswati is the Hindu Goddess of all creative arts. In her popular images she is generally depicted with four arms denoting her omnipresence and omnipotence (some pictures may show only two arms). She is playing of a lute (veena). The lotus is a symbol of the Supreme Reality. The white sari that the Goddess is wearing denotes that she is the embodiment of pure knowledge. The four hands represent the four elements of the inner personality. The mind is represented by the front right hand, the intellect by the front left hand, the conditioned consciousness by the rear left hand, and the ego by the rear right hand.
